Experiences in Biotechnology Academy

Our two-week Experiences in Biotechnology Academy summer course is designed to introduce early high school students (15‑17 years old) and students with limited science exposure to the field of biotechnology.

Through a coordinated integration of lectures, discussions and hands-on activities, students learn how the science of biotechnology has developed over the past several decades and how it is being applied in many disciplines. Students will extract genomic DNA, use biotechnology to examine the toxicity of common substances, and examine the role of biotechnology in health care and the food industry, along with other applications. These lessons give students a basic understanding of the biotechnology field today and a view of future applications.

Students explore a variety of subject areas:

  • Basic laboratory safety
  • Introduction to biotech tools
  • DNA purification methods
  • Enzymes in biotechnology
  • DNA ligation and transformation (cloning)
  • Introduction to bioinformatics
  • Protein purification and chromatography
  • Toxicology
  • Health
